Relationship Between Depression and Social Support Among Undergraduate Medical Students in Universitas Gadjah Mada

This study employed a cross-sectional research design to explore the relationship between depression and social support among undergraduate medical students at Universitas Gadjah Mada. The study utilized the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to measure levels of depression and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) to assess the extent of social support from family, friends, and significant others. The sample consisted of 200 students, selected using a stratified random sampling technique.
Data collection involved online surveys distributed to students across various academic years. The collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between depression and perceived social support. The study also controlled for demographic variables such as age, gender, and academic performance.

The results revealed a significant negative correlation between depression levels and perceived social support among medical students. Students with higher levels of social support reported lower levels of depression, whereas those with inadequate social support experienced higher depressive symptoms. Further analysis showed that first-year students were more vulnerable to depression due to the transition from high school to a demanding academic environment. In contrast, students with strong support networks demonstrated better mental health outcomes and resilience. These findings underscore the critical role of social support in mitigating mental health challenges among medical students.
